This letter gives us another secret to growth and change to those of us who are feeling a little bit complacent. Maybe we feel a little more bored than blessed when we connect with church … Perhaps we feel a lot more attached to this world than we’d like - (who doesn’t struggle with that?) and looking us straight in the eye Jesus says - “I want you to see your need as you never have before. Then I’d be able to meet your need as I never have before.” John writes this way to the church in Laodicea - “To the angel of the church of Laodicea write, ‘These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds that you’re neither cold nor hot … I wish that you were one or the other … But you don’t realise you’re wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you get from me gold refined in the fire so you can become rich and white clothes to wear so you can cover your shameful nakedness salve to put on your eyes so you can see.” (Revelation 3:14 ff) Not easy words from Jesus but they end with his remarkable promise - “Look! I am standing at the door and I'm constantly knocking. If anyone opens the door I will come in and I’ll fellowship with him; I’ll relate to him, I’ll dine with him and he’ll fellowship with me.” (Revelation 3:20 – Message)

Sometimes the beginning of a new year is exciting, as we look forward with a sense of anticipation. Sometimes though, it can also be daunting – especially if last year was a tough one. We can feel weak, tired and even exhausted.
And if you’re feeling a little less than enthusiastic about the year ahead, then you certainly are not the only person on the planet that feels that way. Even the strongest among us sometimes feel tired and weak. Because God is a God of new beginnings and He has a fresh start planned for you on so many different levels, as you set of into 2016.

Some foreign visitors found baby Jesus sometime after his birth. Were there only 3? Were they kings? Astrologers? Priests? Is there symbolism in the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh? Were they there at the same time as the shepherds? Was there a real star that led them on their journey?
This story should encourage us to look anew at what assumptions we have and to look for truth not just within our familiar frame of reference but to see if God is speaking to us in an unexpected way. In one sense, we all want to have a sense of purpose for our lives. It seems that we’re hardwired to look for some sense of significance; to leave some lasting impact in this world. On the other, the notion of God’s calling is frankly, somewhere between disconcerting and downright scary!

We say that God is powerful. God is “all - mighty”. God has unlimited power. God never gets tired. God is never frustrated. Everything God does, He does easily. Nothing is ever too hard, or
too difficult for God. OK - that’s God.
But the Bible says that for us - "all things are possible with God." (Luke 1:37).
